Winter Camp Week 2: Building on Strong Foundations

Following a successful opening week, Kingston Minor Football League athletes returned for Week 2 of Winter Training Camp, continuing to build on the foundational skills, habits, and understanding introduced in the first session.

Week 2 focused on progression—adding layers of complexity while reinforcing consistency, safety, and confidence in a development-first environment.

Continuing Movement Preparation and Injury Prevention

As with Week 1, athletes began the session with a structured warm-up led by Coach Arthur. This routine reinforced muscle and joint activation, static and dynamic stretching, and movement preparation designed to reduce injury risk and prepare athletes for efficient, safe performance on the turf.

Position Training: Progression Through Purpose

Athletes again trained in position-specific groups, where coaches expanded on Week 1 concepts and introduced new technical and tactical elements.

Quarterbacks focused on the fundamentals of quarterbacking philosophy, attitude, and leadership. Training included a quarterback-specific warm-up, base throws, shotgun drops, movement drills, and read-and-react passing concepts.

Running Backs continued agility and plyometric work with an emphasis on change of direction, explosiveness, and field vision. New skills included ball security, pass protection basics, blitz recognition, and run-blocking fundamentals.

Wide Receivers worked through release progression, explosive burst mechanics, controlled deceleration, and linear change of direction. Where time allowed, athletes were introduced to jab steps and catching fundamentals.

Offensive and Defensive Linemen reviewed Week 1 material before progressing into run responsibilities, effective drive blocking, and core techniques such as mirror stepping, chop, and chop-rip movements.

This progression helped athletes deepen their understanding of not only how to perform skills, but why they matter within the context of the game.

Strength & Conditioning: Balance and Stability

Week 2 strength and conditioning work emphasized balance and stability, building on the movement foundations established in the opening session. Athletes focused on single-leg control, core engagement, and controlled bodyweight movements, reinforcing safe patterns that support long-term athletic development across all sports.

Cooling Down With Purpose

The session concluded with a structured cool down that reinforced stretching, mobility, joint care, and recovery habits. Teaching athletes how to properly care for their bodies remains a consistent priority throughout Winter Camp.

Ending With Learning: Understanding the Field Through Film

To close the session, athletes participated in a short film segment designed to build on Week 1’s introduction to film analysis. This week’s focus centered on understanding the field itself—identifying the line of scrimmage, sidelines, and end zones, understanding direction of play, and improving overall on-field awareness.

These guided, discussion-based film sessions continue to reinforce that learning football is about awareness, decision-making, and understanding the game—not criticism or pressure.

Continuing the Winter Camp Journey

Week 2 reinforced the themes introduced in Week 1 while intentionally progressing athlete learning in a safe, age-appropriate way. Winter Camp remains a recreational, development-focused program rooted in long-term athlete development principles—prioritizing skill development, confidence, and enjoyment over short-term outcomes.

With strong foundations now in place, KMFL looks forward to continuing to build confident, capable athletes as Winter Camp progresses.
